dbda celebrates 125 years with Marks & Spencer

dbda has created educational materials for the Marks in Time website - an online experience of Marks & Spencers' 125 year celebrations which launched on 4th June 2009.

All resources have been designed specifically for use on interactive whiteboards in schools and PCs and combine the use of fun, engaging fact sheets and activities.

Aimed at 7 to 11 and 12 to 14 year olds and their teachers, the downloadable fact sheets and activities in the ‘Learn more’ section of the site cover four main themes including:

  • clothing (7-11)
  • food (7-11)
  • financial changes (12-14)
  • employee welfare & CSR (12-14)

Images have been taken directly from the M&S archive to be used as visual stimuli to enable pupils to identify key moments in time from when Michael Marks set up

his first Penny Bazaar in 1884, his partnership with Thomas Spencer in 1894 to Utility Clothing and rationing in World War II and developments in clothing, food, and company policy leading up to the present day.

Each of the themes is linked to the UK curricula covering the key subject areas of English, History, Art & Design and Design & Technology. In addition to these, PSHE and Citizenship (Economic Wellbeing) are covered for pupils aged 12 to 14 years.
