Nationwide sends close to one million Cats' Eyes Reflectors and launches the 'Street Smart Quiz'
To help combat the vulnerability of child pedestrians, Nationwide Building Society has distributed close to one million Cats' Eyes Reflectors to schools across the UK, with more than 13 million distributed over the last eight years. The Cats' Eyes Reflectors are part of Nationwide's commitment to education about road safety, which is a core part of the Nationwide Education online programme (www.NationwideEducation.co.uk) that aims to help increase awareness and understanding of the importance of road safety for children aged between 4 and 11 years. All resources are linked to the National Curricula and the website includes separate sections for teachers, parents and pupils.
dbda is also pleased to announce the launch of the Street Smart Quiz, Nationwide Education's latest road safety resource, for ages 4-7 and 7-11, which uses information from its other two road safety programmes 'Be Safe, Be Seen' and 'Safer Travel' to test pupils' general road safety knowledge.
Caroline Hallatt, Head of Corporate Responsibility, Nationwide, commented: "With the clocks going back, marking the return of long winter nights, children face greater risks on our roads over the coming months.
Evidence shows that Cats' Eyes really do make a significant difference and we urge parents and teachers to encourage children to wear the reflector and increase their visibility to motorists."
Dawn Boyfield MBE, dbda's managing director, commented: "Road crashes are one of the biggest causes of death and injury of children in the UK. Although there have been reductions in child casualties overall, the danger to youngpedestrians increases dramatically in the winter months as daylight hours decrease and visibility is reduced by a third. Nationwide's Cats' Eyes Reflectors and road safety programmes on Nationwide Education, play a key role in helping young children stay safe on our roads."
