Free Nationwide Education Financial Capability resources for My Money Week

This year’s My Money Week, running from the 27th June to the 3rd July, is set to be a huge success providing a nationwide focus on the importance of financial capability education for children and young people. If you are just starting to plan this week in your school Nationwide Education have just the resources for you!

Nationwide Education’s suite of five Financial Capability programmes (for ages 4 through to 18+) have provided schools with the perfect stimulus for a range of money-related activities.

Recent additions to the programmes include a range of activities to help put knowledge into practice, enabling experiential learning. Final quizzes were also added allowing students to test what they have learnt in each programme and earn a certificate of achievement!

In addition, each programme contains interactive games and information fact sheets, work sheets and word glossaries. There are also detailed teacher and parent materials to help you use Nationwide Education in the classroom and at home.

The All Party Parliamentary Advisory Group on Financial Education for Young People, backed by the Personal Finance Education Group (pfeg) and www.moneysavingexpert.com has called for finance education to be compulsory in all schools. This worthy cause is gathering a lot of support, but in the meantime a money themed week for primary and secondary students is a fantastic way to encourage responsible attitudes towards money, helping to equip children for the future.

Here are some ideas to make your My Money Week a success:

  • For ages 4-7 – use the Rena and Jay story books (two volumes telling the tale of a brother and sister saving to buy and look after a pet) with the fun and colourful fact and work sheets to get pupils engaged and excited.
  • For ages 7-11 – divide the class into two teams and play the Money Wiz interactive game, testing their knowledge and understanding of money and finances.
  • For secondary students – try out the practical activities for age groups. Mobile Mayhem gets students to compare mobile phones and select the best tariff for the character, whilst Eshop gives them the opportunity to complete a mock online purchase.

Remember that there is a Final Quiz at the end of each programme for students to put what they have learnt to the test!
